Video discussion of Sigurd and Gudrún

I’ll just let this video speak for itself with no more preface than to note than you’ll get a look at some manuscript lines, some of the illustrations, and a bit of a listen to Brian Cox recording the audiobook.

Brilliant! Can’t wait!

Thanks for posting. I just sent the link through Twitter as there is a good Tolkien group growing on there. Can't wait - try to get through a series of Tolkien books so I can focus on Sigurd in May. BTW: Have you read Doug Kane's Arda Reconstructed book yet - its not out in the UK yet (think July). Also have the Fimi and Monsters book on the list - so many books so little time! Take care Andy

  2. Hi Andy, glad to be of help. :)

I have read Doug Kane’s book, yes, and I recommend anyone interested in The Silmarillion get a copy. It’s not cheap, but it’s something you’ll want on your own bookshelf, for sure. I am pretty certain it is out now, regardless of what Amazon says. I think there was some confusion between the publisher, distributor(s), and retailer(s) — but I’m about 99% sure it’s out in the U.K. as well as the U.S. I would also recommend, just between us, that you don’t wait to order one. With this particular publisher, I wouldn’t be surprised to see it go (in and) out of print.

I haven’t read Dimitra Fimi’s book yet, though it’s high up on my list. I’m hoping to get a copy soon, but it’s even more expensive than Arda Reconstructed!

  3. Oh, and which “Monsters” book did you mean? Are you talking about Michael Drout’s book, which he is currently preparing for a softcover revised edition? Or do you mean the “Mirror Crack’d” collection on Tolkien and horror?

Quite true, I'm afraid. At least Amazon.co.uk is now showing it as available, for the first time (though "Usually dispatched within 9 to 11 days"). That's more than I can say for Amazon.com, which has never actually listed it as currently available, even though I know they have shipped a bunch of copies. I would definitely second Jason's recommendation to go ahead and order it, despite what it says about availbility at Amazon. Or go to another supplier like Barnes & Noble, which has consistently had in stock for a month or more.

Meanwhile, I'm pretty sure that Andrew was referring to Mirror Crack'd, Jase, since it is on his list at his blog.

And I love that video. I'm definitely going to get the audiobook of this one. The bit of reading by Brian Cox is very impressive.

    Cheers!
    Doug

  5. I think Brian Cox is a perfect choice. I’ve been a fan of him (as an actor) for quite some time, and it’s nice to see him getting a job like this.

  6. I'm really curious to see what kind of critical reception this book will get.

  7. Me too. I suspect it will enjoy a very favorable critical reception, especially among Tolkien scholars and medievalists, but possibly a lukewarm popular reception. But we’ll see. I should be able to give you my own feedback here on Lingwë soon — an advance copy is wending its way to me as we speak. I hope to have read it before, or at least by, the official publication date, two weeks hence. :)

  10. Nah; I'm pretty patient for this one. I just admire the abilities of a master scrounger. ;)

  11. Jase, you and your readers might be interested in knowing that Amazon.co.uk now has Part 1 of Christopher TOlkien's Foreword to S&G posted. It also can be read at the Tolkien Library's S&G FAQ.

  12. Yes, I saw that, thanks to a Facebook link from Pieter Collier (of Tolkien Library). Quite interesting! I am planning to post a few bits and bobs this afternoon, including a link to that excerpt.

  13. And I just really think that the blond woman is really quite attractive, really adds something to this little video clip in a way I really won't forget soon.

  14. Anon., she’s a looker, all right. Though I don’t know what that has to do with Tolkien. :)
